A little over a week ago I posted a half informative, half opinionated post about the possible leak of a new FSU logo. It turns out that “leak” is the new logo that was originally set to be unveiled on April 11th. In the preceding post I took the side that I felt the logo changes were an improvement, and that FSU was headed in the right direction. To my surprise, at least a dozen Seminole “fans” felt it necessary to send a few passionate and sometimes hateful tweets and emails my way. I didn’t take it too personally, everybody can share their opinion. I was actually more astonished and flattered at the response to my first blog post. Those disgruntled fans were not alone though. FSU students started a petition to keep the old Osceola head and the primary mark, and the university received thousands of complaints from the Seminole faithful. While I realize I may be in the underwhelming minority, I still feel the updated logo is an improvement and will grow on most people over time.
However, in the previous post I also mentioned my fondness for the brilliant simplicity of the FSU football uniform. The announcement by the athletic department and by Nike that FSU would be wearing a different football uniform was stunning. Jimbo Fisher has long been an adamant supporter of traditional uniforms, but I guess the push for new uniforms was too much for him to fight off.
The new uniforms are anything but an upgrade.
The new Seminole pattern on the neck and the shoulders is too loud. The subtlety of the old Seminole collar is what made it so powerful. The helmet was the best helmet in all of college football and should have never been messed with. My first issue with it was the gold facemask, but it seems that it will be garnet after all. The spears now cross in the back, as a nod to the state flag, but I don’t see it and it looks too busy. And finally, the updated spear. I was hoping it would be left alone, similarly to how LSU left the old tiger logo on their helmet. But when LSU updated the logo on their helmets for the spring game, I knew there was no hope of keeping it.
The gold numbers on all three jerseys look tacky, especially on the away whites. I’m not a huge fan of the solid white look, and don’t get me started on the atrocious black uniform and horrendous looking two tone helmet. Two-tone helmets have never looked good. Not on San Diego State, not on the Jaguars, and this does nothing to change that perception. That helmet hopefully never sees in game action.
But what’s done is done. In summation I am one of the few in support of the new logo, but I will be first to sign any petition that gets rid of these new football uniforms.
